For many, the honeymoon at the end of the long and ultimately exciting process of getting married is a once-in-a-lifetime experience – the most luxurious and unforgettable romantic holiday of their lives.
It’s therefore important to get it right, with the decisions surrounding destinations and hotels carefully considered so as to create the perfect post-nuptial escape.
The traditional wedding season in the United Kingdom spans the spring and summer months of April through to late August; with many hoping for the best weather in the inclement British Isles during these months.
However some are now choosing to get married in the UK’s winter months of November – February to take advantage of better availability of venues, the Christmas and New Year holiday seasons and to make the most of their budget.
A winter wedding also means more options for the all-important honeymoon as the cooler months in the UK are the ideal dates to travel to the sun-kissed islands of the Caribbean or the bare-foot paradise of the Indian Ocean islands of the Maldives, Mauritius and Seychelles. This is also perhaps why many summer wedding couples now opt for a post-big day ‘minimoon’ closer to home, reserving their ‘proper’ honeymoon for winter.
The UK winter months are the ideal time to travel to the Caribbean, with the months of December – April being the driest time of the year. The islands of Barbados, Antigua and St Lucia in particular also offer honeymooners an array of hotels and resorts to enjoy a luxury holiday with turquoise waters and white sand beaches.
It’s for sound reason that the region is the playground of the rich and famous, and after the excitement of saying ‘I do’ a Caribbean honeymoon offers the ideal wind down opportunity for newlyweds.
Sandy Lane, Barbados is the ultimate luxury hotel experience and is where celebrities and royalty go to experience the most impeccable standards of service, all located in the most enchanting and inspiring of beachside destinations.
Another iconic island to explore is Jamaica. For utter romance there’s the Jamaica Inn & Spa Hotel – one of the best-loved resorts in the Caribbean and set in six secluded acres of paradise.
Of course for true winter-lovers the season also provides the opportunity to experience some of Europe’s winter ski holidays, as well as the winter markets of central and Eastern Europe, and a holiday to one of Europe’s premier winter destinations, including Austria, Switzerland and France, would provide a luxury honeymoon with a difference.
Locations such as Altitude Lodge in the French Alps or the Chalet Tortin in Switzerland would involve the invigorating mountain fresh air, majesty of the Alps and breathtaking views teamed with superb pistes and après ski.
Much of Europe is under snow or frost in winter, but if you head to its southern-most regions there’s still a strong chance of sunshine. Madeira boasts a mild climate in winter, and when teamed with a luxurious destination such as Reid’s Palace, it’s a strong contender for a honeymoon closer to home.
For many this once in a lifetime holiday is the chance to see a part of the world they have never been to before. If this is the case, great winter choices include Koh Samui in Thailand and the Maldives. A stay at the Four Seasons Koh Samui from December to February will enable newlyweds to make the most of dry season. Or if the magical Maldives entice, the luxurious Niyama has an all-inclusive package ideal for taking the effort out of your escape.
