Porsche 918 Spyder

With the 918 Spyder, Porsche have gone all out to produce a hybrid supercar (or Hypercar as this class of vehicle is known) to compete with the likes of the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari and in all fairness they may have succeeded. The 918 may not be the fasted or the lightest of the trio, but the guys from Stuttgart have developed a more complete package by the use of clever engineering to produce in their own words “a car that takes the technical capabilities of hybrid to the limits of what’s possible”

Porsche-918_SpyderPowered by a 4.6 litre V8 hybrid engine that is coupled to the Porsche Doppelkupplung PDK gearbox, this combination produces a maximum power output of 875bhp. This is all encased in a lightweight composite body with full carbon chassis and allows the Porsche to hit a top speed of 214mph and a 0-60 time of just under 2.6 seconds.

Weight saving is further enhanced by the addition of a Weissach Pack with magnesium wheels and a body wrap as opposed to paint.

Porsche-918-Spyder-interiorInterior toys start with the multi-function steering wheel that has a switch to select one of the five driving modes available (E-Power, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot Lap).

Much thought has also been given to the body styling and function. There are active vents that open and close automatically and the rear spoiler raises and lowers as required, all this helps to reduce drag and keep the car stable and glued to the road.

The 918 Spyder also has the neat addition of removable roof panels that can then be stored in the boot space.

Turn the ignition key and you might be disappointed to hear…nothing! The car always moves away under electric power only, “kick” down on the accelerator pedal however and the V8 engines growls into life.

The Porsche is a fast car, as you would expect from such a powerful car that weighs in at only 1674kg’s. The steering is also very impressive, giving the driver just the right amount of feedback when pushing hard.

Priced at £652,849, the Porsche 918 Spyder is a very special car indeed. Not only does it look the part, it is a real joy to drive as well.
